“What Happens if a Presidential Candidate Becomes Unable to Stand for Election or Assume Office?”

Event Date

Location
1115 11th Street, Sacramento and by Zoom webinar

Talk by Professor Erik Engstrom, Professor of Political Science at UC Davis.

This talk will explore what happens if a presidential candidate becomes unable to stand for election in November — or if a president-elect is unable to assume office in January — due to death, incapacitation, or withdrawal.

The answer depends on where we are in the electoral calendar. The multi-stage process of selecting an American president creates a variety of potential contingencies. This talk will also cover the political maneuvering that may result from such a series of events taking place.

Professor Erik Engstrom is a Professor of Political Science at UC Davis. He specializes in the study of U.S. political institutions and American political development. Professor Engstrom is the author of four books and numerous research articles on topics including ballot design, legislative redistricting, and state constitutional development. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation. Professor Engstrom served as Chair of the UC Davis Political Science Department from 2017 to 2021.
