Talk by Dr. Elisa K. Tong, Professor, Department of Internal Medicine, and Medical Director of the Stop Tobacco Program, UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center at UC Davis Health.
Sixty years ago, the first U.S. Surgeon General’s report concluded that smoking causes diseases like lung cancer and can lead to death. As more studies showed that secondhand smoke exposure harms people who never smoked, these findings led to groundbreaking smoke free policies and prevention programs — led by California. However, new products, including vaping and co-use with cannabis, are causing new problems among younger generations. Additionally, health care has been slow to prioritize, conduct, and measure assessment and treatment for tobacco use, much less cannabis.
In spite of these challenges, this talk will identify opportunities to address these issues related to tobacco and cannabis use by bridging health care and public health through population health strategies and policies that prioritize health equity.
Dr. Elisa K. Tong is a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UC Davis Health; Medical Director of the Stop Tobacco Program; and Assistant Director for Population Sciences, UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center. She is also the Director for the Tobacco Cessation Policy Research Center, a community-academic partnership housed at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, as well as Principal Investigator for CA Quits, a collaborative to advance tobacco treatment with health plans and public hospital clinic systems serving Medi-Cal.
