Dr. Ziad Obermeyer, Associate Professor and Blue Cross of California Distinguished Professor at UC Berkeley and Senator Bill Dodd (District 3)
New developments in artificial intelligence such as ChatGPT have not only started to change how people find information, they have overturned previous conceptions about the pace of progress. These models are powerful; ChatGPT not only scores better on medical board exams than the average doctor, it is rated as more empathetic by patients. And the technology is evolving at breakneck speed. The AI revolution raises many ethical and policy questions about how these systems will be used, regulated, and controlled. Today’s panelists will address these questions from the perspective of an academic physician and AI researcher and a California State Senator who has sponsored landmark legislation on self-driving vehicles, cybersecurity, and personal privacy and is a member of the California Legislative Technology and Innovation Caucus.
Senator Bill Dodd represents California’s 3rd Senate District in the heart of the scenic North San Francisco Bay Area. The fifth-generation Californian grew up on his family’s small Napa farm and was a successful business owner before being elected to the Napa County Board of Supervisors, the state Assembly and the state Senate, where he is now serving his second term. Sen. Dodd’s work has spanned many topics - from improving public education and the environment to data privacy and protecting seniors. Prior to his election to the Senate, he represented the 4th Assembly District. In the Assembly, he worked to help small businesses, protect the environment, and support seniors and working families.
Dr. Ziad Obermeyer is an Associate Professor and Blue Cross of California Distinguished Professor at UC Berkeley, where he works at the intersection of machine learning and health.
