Firearm Violence and Its Prevention: From Scientific Evidence to Effective Policy

This presentation will review salient scientific research on the nature and prevention of firearm violence and discuss the relationship between such research and violence prevention efforts.
Dr. Wintemute is the inaugural Baker-Teret Chair in Violence Prevention at the University of California, Davis and founding director of that institution’s Violence Prevention Research Program. He practices and teaches emergency medicine at UC Davis Medical Center, Sacramento and is a professor of emergency medicine at the UC Davis School of Medicine. His research focuses on the nature and prevention of violence, particularly firearm violence, and on the development and evaluation of violence prevention programs and policies. Cur-rent studies include assessments of alcohol abuse and other characteristics as risk factors for criminal activity among legal purchasers of handguns, evaluations of the effectiveness of recovering firearms from individuals who are prohibited from owning them, and survey research on licensed firearm retailers.
