This panel will provide context for a rich discussion of the challenges and opportunities for expanding access to postsecondary education for Latinx students in California. Dr. Gloria Rodriguez and Dr. Frances Contreras will present an overview of select data on the changing educational landscape in California including student preparation, transition to college, remediation rates, and the levels of investment being made in Latinx-serving districts. Finally, recommendations and potential policy solutions for further engagement and Latinx community investment will be discussed.

 

Speakers

Professor Frances Contreras, UC San Diego

UC San DiegoDr. Frances Contreras is an Associate Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and an Associate Professor in the Department of Education Studies. Her research focuses on issues of equity and access for underrepresented students in the education pipeline and the role of public policy in ensuring student equity across a P-20 continuum. Contreras’ most recent books include: Achieving Equity for Latino Students, Expanding the Pathway to Higher Education through Public Policy and The Latino Education Crisis with P. Gandara.

Professor Gloria Rodriguez, UC Davis

UC DavisGloria M. Rodriguez’s current research explores notions of educational investment that reflect efforts to build upon community strengths in order to address community needs within and beyond educational settings. Dr. Rodriguez also engages in research that focuses on the political economic conditions and educational trajectories of Chicana/o-Latina/o communities, other communities of color, and low-income populations in the U.S.

Senator Ben Allen, CA 26th District

Senator Ben Allen represents the 26th Senate District, which consists of the Westside, Hollywood and coastal South Bay communities of Los Angeles County. He serves as chair of the Senate Education Committee and the legislature's Joint Committee on the Arts.  He is a member of the Senate Committees on Elections and Constitutional Amendments, Natural Resources and Water, and Transportation and Housing.  He co-chairs the Environmental Caucus and is vice-chair of the Jewish Caucus.

Assemblyman Kevin Kiley, CA 6th District

Assemblyman Kevin Kiley represents the 6th Assembly District, which includes Placer, Sacramento, and El Dorado counties. He serves as Vice-Chair of the Privacy and Consumer Protection Committee, and is a member of the Education, Higher Education, Judiciary, and Public Safety committees.
