According to the latest U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development report on homelessness, more than 118,000 individuals experience homelessness in California. On any given night, an estimated sixty-six percent of California’s homeless individuals sleep on the street, without access to emergency shelters, transitional housing, or safe havens. Many factors contribute to the rate of homelessness, including lack of affordable housing, mental illness or drug addictions, and family instability or domestic violence. Each factor contributing to homelessness poses its own unique challenge to assist homeless individuals.

The UC Center Sacramento is pleased to host a panel of experts who will discuss the causes of homelessness, the challenges these causes pose, and potential solutions to alleviate homelessness in California. This panel will share insight on the causes of-and solutions to homelessness from a variety of perspectives, including sociological and legal perspectives from Professor Blasi, a medical perspective from Dr. Zevin, and a housing policy perspective from an expert member of the California Department of Housing and Community Development, Zachary Olmstead.
