Policy Forum Series

What's Behind the Decline? Understanding Public Transit Trends in California

The University of California Institute of Transportation Studies (UC ITS)  and the UC Center Sacramento are pleased to present a timely policy forum series that brings together leaders in academia, the public sector, industry, and non-governmental organizations to discuss the latest thinking and scientific insights on a range of transportation challenges facing California. All four forums will be held from 12:00 - 1:30 pm at the UC Center Sacramento located at 1130 K Street, Sacramento CA. There is no cost to attend though registration is required. Lunch will be provided. Both registration and lunch will begin at 11:30am.

Public transit ridership is on the decline. This is a significant concern to transit and elected officials, particularly given the substantial financial commitment regions are making in new transit investments. This forum will highlight presentations from UC ITS researchers who will explore how data about travel behavior and public transit supply can shed light on this concerning trends in public transit ridership. Their presentations will cover research findings about current transit riders, potential transit riders and the travel behavior of carless households in California.

Moderator: Professor Brian Taylor - Director, Institute of Transportation Studies, UCLA

Speakers: Mike Manville –  Assistant Professor of Urban Planning, UCLA

Jean-Daniel Saphores – Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, UC Irvine

Guest Respondent: Josh Shaw – Executive Director, California Transit Association

UC ITS BACKGROUND: Established by the California Legislature in 1947, the UC ITS represents a network of faculty, researchers, staff and students dedicated to advancing the state of the art in transportation engineering, planning, and policy development in California. UC ITS has grown from a single-campus program at UC Berkeley to include units at UC Davis, UC Irvine, and UCLA. Since 1992, the four ITS branches have expanded their research, education, and outreach programs to form the foremost university transportation research center in the world.
