2014-15 Bacon Public Lectureship Winner

UC Center announces the winner of its inaugural UCCS Bacon Public Lectureship and White Paper Competition 2014-15

Sacramento, CA- UC Center Sacramento announces the winner of its first annual UCCS Bacon Public Lectureship and White Paper Competition. Open to faculty and researchers throughout the UC system, the Bacon Lectureship focuses on evidence-based public policy.

The winner is Professor Michael Gottfried from the Gevirtz School of Education at UC Santa Barbara.

Dr. Richard Kravitz, interim director of UC Center Sacramento, believes that the Bacon Lectureship affords an important opportunity for the University of California to deliver on its promise of discovering and sharing knowledge to advance the public good in California. “Through the generosity of Kevin and Kim Bacon, UC Center Sacramento will bring world-class UC faculty to the state Capitol to address critical policy questions raised by legislative staff and other government officials,” said Dr. Kravitz.

Professor Gottfried’s entry focused on pre-K education and will be the subject of his public lecture, “Which Pre-kindergarten Options are Best Preparing English Language Learners to Start School?” The lecture will be presented at UC Center on February 26, 2015. On February 25th, the Center will host a reception honoring UCCS founders and supporters, Kevin and Kim Bacon, and the 2015 Bacon Lecturer.

Gottfried’s paper was submitted as part of a UC-wide “call” that asked UC faculty to submit proposals to stimulate evidence synthesis and creative thinking around a pressing public policy problem. In addition to presenting the lecture, Professor Gottfried will receive a stipend and meet with relevant policy staff in Sacramento. His entry was selected by a panel of policy experts convened by UC Center.

“With the selection of Professor Michael Gottfried of UC Santa Barbara as this year’s Bacon Lecturer, the series is off to an outstanding start” said Dr. Kravitz.
