Concerns about the strength of our democracy and about the quality of democratic participation have grown in recent years.  In this presentation, Professor Kahne will share research detailing the very real reasons for concern regarding the health of our democracy.  Specifically, he will highlight trends and dynamics that have grown steadily over the course of the past several decades.  In addition, he will detail research that demonstrates ways that particular educational practices can respond to these problems and concerns by strengthening the degree to which educational institutions can prepare youth for thoughtful and effective democratic engagement.  Following this, Professor Kahne will describe varied district level and state level policies and reform efforts and assess their potential for meaningfully advancing the democratic purposes of schools.

Joseph Kahne is the Ted and Jo Dutton Presidential Professor for Education Policy and Politics atKahne Photo the University of California, Riverside.  He is also the Director of the Civic Engagement Research Group (CERG).  Professor Kahne's research and writing focuses on the influence of school practices and new media on youth civic and political development.  Currently, he is working on the Leveraging Equity and Access for Democratic Education (LEADE) project, which supports district-wide change related to democratic education in Oakland, Chicago, Riverside, and Los Angeles. He sits on the steering committee of the National Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Science's Commission on Civic Engagement.
