Patrick Romano

Everyone wants accessible, high-quality health care at a lower cost. How are we doing in California, compared with other US states and countries? This seminar will provide an overview of health care access and quality in California on the eve of implementation of the Affordable Care Act.

Dr. Patrick Romano is Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics and Director of the Primary Care Outcomes Research faculty development program at UC Davis School of Medicine.  He is a graduate of Princeton University, Georgetown University School of Medicine, and the UC Berkeley School of Public Health.  He completed training in internal medicine and pediatrics at University Hospitals of Cleveland, followed by fellowship training in health services research at UC San Francisco.  His research interests include developing, testing, and validating health care quality measures, using outcomes data to improve the quality and effectiveness of health care, and studying the role of physicians and nurses in optimizing quality and safety.  Over the past 20 years, he has written or co-written over 120 peer-reviewed papers and provided technical assistance to many agencies involved in measuring or reporting on health care quality, including the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development and Office of the Patient Advocate, the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the international Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.  He has served on expert panels for the National Quality Forum, The Joint Commission, the National Committee for Quality Assurance, the World Health Organization, and UHC.
