UC Center Sacramento Welcomes Former Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye as 2024 Governance Fellow
Sacramento, CA – The UC Center Sacramento (UCCS) is pleased to announce that former California Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye has been selected as its 2024 Governance Fellow.
Each year, UCCS appoints a prominent California public servant as its Governance Fellow. Prior Fellows have included former members of the legislature, officials elected or appointed to statewide office, justices of the state supreme court, and the chief clerk of the Assembly. Fellows normally alternate between Democratic and Republican party affiliation.
“During her 12 years as leader of the third branch of government, Chief Justice Cantil-Sakauye brought a non-partisan sensibility to the Court and supported significant policy initiatives related to bail reform, civil discourse, and immigration enforcement,” said Richard Kravitz, Director of UC Center Sacramento. “Now, as President and CEO of the Public Policy Institute of California, she will offer our students a unique perspective on the intersection of politics, policy, and the law.”
Before she was elected statewide as the Chief Justice of California, Ms. Cantil-Sakauye served more than 20 years on California superior and appellate courts. Earlier in her career she served as a deputy district attorney for the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office and on the senior staff of Governor Deukmejian, first as deputy legal affairs secretary and later as a deputy legislative secretary. She holds a BA and a JD from the University of California, Davis.
UCCS is a teaching and policy research dissemination program of the University of California. Its mission is to prepare California’s future leaders for careers in public service and to share research-based knowledge in the interest of better public policymaking. UCCS Governance Fellows provide guidance to UCCS undergraduates as they undertake coursework and internships at or near the Capitol.
Tani Cantil-Sakauye’s term as the UCCS 2024 Governance Fellow begins on January 1, 2024 and continues through December 31, 2024.
